The Discovery Question Bank

Questions That Uncover Real Deals

Great discovery is not an interrogation. It is a guided conversation that moves from surface symptoms to business impact to urgency. Use these questions as a menu, not a checklist. Pick the ones that fit the moment, listen more than you talk, and always follow a strong answer with "tell me more about that."

Situation and Context

  • Walk me through how this process works today, step by step.
  • Who is involved, and where does it tend to break down?
  • What tools are you using now, and where do they fall short?
  • How long has it been done this way?
  • What changed recently that made this worth looking at now?

Problem and Pain

  • What does this problem cost you, in time, money, or risk?
  • How often does it happen: daily, weekly, or occasionally?
  • Who feels the pain most directly?
  • What have you already tried, and why didn't it stick?
  • If nothing changes, what does this look like in six months?

Impact and Cost of Inaction

  • If this were solved, what would that make possible?
  • What is this problem preventing you from doing right now?
  • How does this affect the people above you?
  • Is this a "nice to fix" or a "must fix"? What makes it that?
  • What happens to you personally if this isn't solved?

Decision Process and Authority

  • Besides yourself, who needs to be comfortable with a decision like this?
  • How have you bought similar tools before?
  • What does the approval process look like, and how long does it usually take?
  • Is there a budget set aside for this, or would it need to be created?
  • Who could say no to this even if you say yes?

Risk, Trust, and Timing

  • What would make this feel like a safe decision for you?
  • What is your biggest concern about moving forward?
  • What would need to be true for you to start next month?
  • Is there a deadline or event driving the timing?
  • On a scale of one to ten, how urgent is this, and what would make it a ten?

Quick Reference

  • Move from situation, to pain, to impact, to decision, to timing.
  • Follow every strong answer with "tell me more."
  • Listen far more than you speak.
  • A qualified deal has a named sponsor, a cost of inaction, and a timeline.
